Tova frees Marcellus from a tangled cord
Remarkably Bright CreaturesTova Sullivan frees Marcellus from a charging cord after finding him out of his tank and trapped beneath a lunch table. The encounter turns her routine evening work into a close, uncertain negotiation: she approaches a distressed animal that can grip her with startling force, yet the octopus chooses to release her and move away. His return to his tank does not explain how he escaped, leaving the episode both a rescue and the first tangible evidence of his unobserved nocturnal activity.
Discovery in the break room
During her rounds, Tova notices signs of disorder: empty takeout cartons, a trash can displaced several feet from its usual position, and chairs around a small lunch table that need straightening. Beneath the table she sees a brownish-orange clump, at first resembling a sweater left behind by Mackenzie, who works at the admission kiosk. When the clump moves, Tova recognizes a tentacle; the eye that appears from the octopus’s mass makes the impossible fact unmistakable to her: Marcellus is outside his tank.
The Giant Pacific octopus is caught in a tangle of power cords. One thin cord, the sort used to charge a cell phone, has wound several times around an arm. As Marcellus strains, the loops tighten and his flesh bulges between them. Tova understands the trap through a remembered toy from Erik’s childhood: a woven cylinder that grips more tightly when someone pulls at it. The recollection gives her a concrete reason not to tug at the cord or at the animal.
A cautious rescue
Tova initially backs away when Marcellus smacks an arm against the linoleum, a clear warning in the moment. She then edges closer, hands shaking, and recalls that the plaque beneath his tank never said octopuses were dangerous to humans. From a foot away, she sees that he appears to be shrinking and has turned pale. She identifies the cord’s plug and tells him she will reach around him to unplug it, while his eye follows her movements.
When Tova pulls the plug, Marcellus flinches backward, and she flinches in turn. She expects him to slip along the wall toward the door, in the direction he had been straining. Instead, one arm reaches toward her and winds around her forearm, then her elbow and upper arm. Its suckers cling individually to her skin. Tova reflexively tries to pull free, but Marcellus tightens his hold until it is nearly uncomfortable. The scene’s threat is real in her body, yet his eye seems playful rather than hostile; the contact does not become an attack.
Marcellus releases her as abruptly as he seized her. He moves out through the break-room door, traveling on the thickest parts of his eight legs while his mantle seems to drag behind. He is still pale and appears to move with effort. Tova hurries after him, but when she reaches the hallway he has vanished. The episode thus ends the immediate danger of the cord without showing where Marcellus goes next or how he reached the room in the first place.
Evidence and unresolved escape
After Marcellus disappears, Tova questions her own perception and connects the possibility of hallucination to the decline she witnessed in her late mother’s memory. The marks on her arm provide physical evidence against dismissing the encounter: it is covered in tiny circles left by suckers. Earlier clues now take on a different meaning. The cartons and displaced trash can that seemed like ordinary mess are consistent with Marcellus’s presence beyond his tank, even though Tova has not seen how he got there.
Later, during her good-night rounds, Tova finds Marcellus hidden behind a rock in his tank. A puff of flesh shows, and his orange coloring has grown more vivid than it was in the break room, though he remains paler than usual. Tova calls him a troublemaker and pauses at the tank before leaving. She scans the water and the rim for an obvious way out, but nothing appears amiss. His presence in the tank confirms that he is no longer loose in the building; the route of his escape, and how he returned, remain unexplained.
Significance of the encounter
The rescue depends on Tova treating Marcellus as a responsive creature rather than simply trying to overpower the tangle. She notices the tightening cord, identifies its plug, warns him before reaching, and persists despite her fear. Her familiar cleaning rounds have made her attentive to the small disruptions around her, but the shifted bin and the discarded cartons point beyond housekeeping to a hidden life unfolding after hours.
The brief embrace complicates the rescue’s apparent roles. Tova frees Marcellus from a physical restraint, yet the octopus controls the contact that follows: he binds her arm, tests the moment, and lets go. His later concealment behind the rock restores the scene to the ordinary sight of an animal in its tank, but not to ordinary certainty. Tova has encountered Marcellus outside his enclosure, and the unexplained escape opens a continuing question about what he does when the building is quiet.
